General Information

Description

Project name changed to Map-Fu. YAMI is an acronym for Yet Another Mapping Interface. It is intended to be a general mapping interface that can be easily modified to address specific map generation and manipulation needs (particularly for GIS purposes). It uses Mapserver and PHP 5 on the server side and Javascript on client side. Much of the look and functionality has been borrowed and "genericized" from the OSCDL project.

Purpose and goal of the project

To provide a framework that can be configured to create and display a map image(s) which can be manipulated (zooming, querying, layer selection, etc).

Scope and Scale

Customer

The open source denizens who want a mapping framework that can easily be thrown up on a web page with minimal fuss. It is also intended for those with some web development experience.

Users/ audience

Those who want to look at a pretty map.

Scope

As of August 2006, YAMI is preparing for alpha release, and the scope is minimal. Its framework is basic and should allow a user to quickly define a set of Mapserver map files that can be used to define map creation parameters, and a set of "standard" map navigation/manipulation tools. It expects Mapserver version 4.8.0-rc2 (or greater) and PHP 5 to be installed on the host, and IN NO WAY attempts to help or advise in the installation/configuration of these tools.

Architecture/Design

Project Specification

YAMI uses PHP on the server side for configuration and to initially create the map interface. On the client side, it uses Javascript (AJAX) to create the map (and any related images) and to maintain the interface's state. Any changes are made via an AJAX call to update the map and its related data.

Requirements

Mapserver version 4.8.0-rc2 (or greater) and PHP 5 installed on the host.
